Ever wonder why small-town football teams pick colors that pop louder than the cannon my dad used to fire off at Union County High School games back in the ‘90s and 2000s? If you were there, you’d have heard that booming celebration every time the Panthers scored a touchdown—yep, Dad was the “cannon master,” and they even built that beauty in his shop class! Complementary colors like purple and yellow are the unsung heroes of the design world—they’re the Friday night lights of any tablescape, the kind of duo that makes you want to cheer, “Go, Panthers, go!” They’re bold, they’re sassy, and they pop like the fireworks at the county fair. So, grab your sweet tea (or moonshine, I won’t judge), and let’s craft a purple-and-yellow table that’s as charming as a hometown parade and twice as vibrant. From a centerpiece that’ll make your heart do a two-step to place settings that holler, “Y’all come back now,” this table’s about to steal the show at your next gathering.
Find Your Inspiration…
Picture this: I’m unboxing a Sami Sacha Country Spring delivery—basically a floral explosion in a box—and it’s like the county fair flower competition just showed up at my door. Pinks, creams, and lavenders spill out, each bloom prettier than the last. Gorgeous, right? But my heart wasn’t doing cartwheels for those soft hues. Nope, it was the lavender anemones and limonium that tugged at my sleeve, whispering, “Darlin’, make us the stars of this rodeo.” So, I decided to lean into the purples and build a table that’s equal parts bold and dreamy—like when you plan to tailgate in jeans but end up in your best sundress because the vibe just feels right. Inspiration’s like that sometimes; it grabs the wheel, and you just gotta ride shotgun.
Select a Color Palette…
With those purples stealing the spotlight, I dusted off my trusty color wheel (yes, I’m the nerd who keeps one in her craft closet—don’t judge). Purple’s complement is yellow, and let me tell you, this duo is a match made in small-town heaven. Think LSU Tigers or—better yet—my high school, Union County Panthers. Go Panthers! Purple and gold were the colors of my teenage dreams, plastered on every pep rally poster and glittering under those Friday night lights. They bring all the drama to a table, and I wanted this setup to pop like the Homecoming float that won first prize. So, I stuck with vibrant purples and sunny yellows—no wallflowers allowed at this hoedown.
Make it All About the Patterns…
Spring was in the air, and those anemones were giving me all the country-fair vibes—minus the sticky cotton candy fingers and the Ferris wheel that always made me queasy. I knew gingham was the way to go. It’s the denim overalls of patterns: timeless, charming, and always ready for a good time. I picked a purple-and-white gingham tablecloth that screamed “small-town charm” without veering into “we’re-having-a-picnic-at-the-lake” territory—though it’d totally work for that too. If you’ve seen my Instagram, you know I’m a sucker for checks—they sneak into my tables like that one cousin who always shows up uninvited but brings the best pie.
Now, I’d been daydreaming about painting gingham on wooden circles for placemats (or would they be chargers? Somebody help me settle this debate! I’m Team Placemat because I’d leave ‘em on the table, but I’ve heard chargers get whisked away with the dinner plates. If you know what makes a placemat a placemat and a charger a charger, drop it in the comments—I’m dying to know!).
I got sidetracked chasing that purple bunny—sorry, not sorry, it’s a habit. Back to patterns. Gingham’s my small-scale star, so I needed a medium-scale sidekick. I snagged some purple napkins from Amazon, but they were giving “meh” vibes, like a lemonade stand with no sugar. Stripes? Nope, Then I remembered some floral fabric tucked away in my stash, bursting with purple blooms and hints of pink and yellow. Thank heavens my step-mom taught me to sew back when I was a kid—I started with Barbie clothes, graduated to my own wardrobe, and even whipped up a formal dress for a sorority ball back in the day. I stitched up some napkins, dreaming of adding yellow trim to make them pop like a prize-winning quilt, but patience isn’t my strong suit, and same-day delivery wasn’t an option. So, plain they stayed, but they still brought that hometown charm to the table.
Large-scale patterns? I wasn’t feeling them yet, so I hit pause. A good table’s like a blue-ribbon pie recipe—sometimes you gotta tweak it as you go.
Pick Your Stack…
I tried purple placemats, then yellow placemats, but they were hollering louder than the rooster that wakes up the whole farm at dawn. Too much. So, I dug out my white wooden chargers from a magical shopping adventure at And That! in Kennesaw. Picture me, scouring the aisles of this Christmas Tree Shoppe gem, snatching up seven of these swirly treasures like I’d just won the cakewalk. Later, I scored eight more on a second trip—only to learn the store was closing. Heartbreak! But these placemats? They’re the perfect charming base for this table, like the wooden dance floor at a barn wedding, just begging for some color to two-step across it.
Next, I reached for my Spode Willow Lilac plates. I flirted with other purple and yellow options, but my heart kept coming back to Willow, like a high school crush you can’t quit. My plate collection’s a bit light on purple and yellow—guess I need to hit more estate sales, or maybe the flea market down by the old mill!
For the salad plates, I decided to mimic the shape of the charger and use my reticulated salads that you may have seen on my St. Patrick’s Day Table. I bought 4 and then went back to buy more and they were already sold out!!!! Cue the violins—I’m still mourning. For the other settings, I used milk glass plates to keep things cohesive yet quirky, like mismatched chairs at a family reunion. The milk glass plates went to the settings at the ends of the table.
The cherry on top? My yellow cabbage bowls. You’re thinking Bordallo Pinheiro, aren’t you? Well, surprise—they’re from Sur La Table, but I’d bet my best tablecloth BP made ‘em. They’re identical to my BP bowls, and they bring just the right dose of whimsy to this stack—like a prize pig at the fair, stealing the show with a wink and a snort.
Select the Linens…
With my gingham tablecloth and DIY floral napkins in place, I was ready to talk napkin rings. I’ve got these stunning purple ceramic ones with iris blooms, perfect for an iris-centric table (coming soon, y’all!). I also considered my yellow lemon rings from my “Lime with a Twist” setup, but citrus wasn’t the vibe. This table was all about country charm, not a lemonade stand at the summer festival. In the end, I tucked the napkins under the salad plates and called it a day. Sometimes, less is more—like skipping the fancy hat at the church potluck and letting your smile do the talking.
Time for Glassware & Flatware…
Glassware was trickier than a barrel race on a rainy day. I’ve got Fostoria Gold Vogue Tint from my “Tablecloth For All Seasons” table, but its golden hue was too moody for the sunny yellow I craved. I also have an Anchor Hocking Bubble yellow, but it wasn’t “sunny” enough—like a cloudy day at the fair. So, purple it was! I pulled out a set of Casual Settings by Cristal D’Arques-Durand—seriously, who named these? It’s like they ran out of ideas after naming their other glasses and just threw in a hyphen for fun. But they’re pretty, so I’ll forgive the mouthful. Estate sale find, naturally—because nothing says “small-town charm” like a bargain hunt.
For flatware, I considered my purple Annovo set from Amazon but wasn’t feeling the vibe. Instead, I went with my Oneida Chandelier, which reminds me of peacock feathers. Speaking of peacocks, there’s a house a couple of miles away with these strutters, and one day, I swear, I saw one prancing down our street—across a highway! Do peacocks roam that far? I need answers, because that bird was living its best life, and I’m here for it. Anyway, the Chandelier flatware added just the right touch of elegance to this charming setup—like a fiddle player joining the barn dance.
Centerpiece Magic…
Oh, the centerpiece—pure magic, like the blue-ribbon bouquet at the fair! Those lavender anemones and limonium were the belles of the ball, and I had a blast arranging them (sharing a video soon!). Then, fate smiled at me in the Kroger floral department. I’m a pickup/delivery girl, but I’ll brave the store for blooms faster than you can say “carnival prize.” Lo and behold, I spotted yellow cottage roses—gorgeous and new to me! I scooped them up quicker than a kid grabbing a goldfish at the ring toss.
I used a white compote bowl (RIP, my pasta salad days—it’s chipped but too pretty to toss) and worked some tape-method magic for arranging. If you haven’t tried it, trust me, it’s a game-changer—like finding the perfect spot to watch the parade. I added two smaller flower containers, some Capodimonte florals, and my yellow water lily votive holders, which I’ve been itching to use forever. Yellow’s rare on my tables, but I find myself using it more and more and these babies finally got their moment to shine—like the twirling batons at halftime.
The Final Touches…
Before I could break out my checklist, I took a step back. The table was cute, but it was missing that wow factor—like a fair without a pie-eating contest. The centerpiece was singing, but the rest? A little ho-hum. I needed a large-scale pattern and some pizzazz to make it feel like the whole town showed up.
Runners were my first thought, but my runner collection’s slimmer than my patience on a bad day. I had four, none purple. Then I remembered my old trick: fold a lightweight tablecloth into a runner. I dug through my tablecloth closet and found a purple damask beauty—lightweight, foldable, perfect.
I laid it down, and my heart did a little jig—until I realized it clashed with the Spode’s undertones. Not every table can handle mixed undertones, and this wasn’t the one.
I swapped the Spode for my Crown Ducal Bristol in Mulberry, much improved.
Time for the checklist:
- Height variation? Check! The main arrangement soared like a prize-winning sunflower, and the smaller ones played supporting roles.
- Colors balanced? Check! Purple and yellow showed up at least three times each. Green, white, cream, and pink made cameos but didn’t steal the show.
- Inviting and functional? Check! This table nailed the charming, country-fair vibe I was chasing—like a front-porch swing on a summer evening.
Capture the Look…
Taking pictures in my breakfast nook is like playing a game of “will the sun cooperate?” Lately, it’s been cloudy and rainy, and with our woodsy backyard in full bloom, natural light’s been scarcer than a blue-ribbon pie at the fair. But the clouds parted just enough—like they knew this table deserved its moment—and with my ring light on a tripod, I was in business. The table glowed, the colors popped, and I may have done a little happy dance, twirling like I was back at the homecoming dance. This purple-and-yellow beauty was ready for her close-up, and I’m pretty sure she’s ready to win “Best in Show” at your next hometown gathering.

From My Table to Yours,
Melissa
